Introduction

When it comes to drag racing, the right wheels can mean the difference between a record-breaking pass and spinning at the line. But before you bolt on a new set of front runners or rear drag wheels, it’s crucial to understand PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter), offset, backspacing, and wheel width. This guide will show you exactly how to measure your car’s PCD, how to choose the correct wheel size, and which PCDs are most common in the drag racing world.

What is PCD?

PCD stands for Pitch Circle Diameter. It refers to the diameter of the imaginary circle drawn through the center of your wheel’s bolt holes. It’s always described with two numbers:

The number of studs (bolt holes)

The diameter in millimetres of that circle

For example:

5x114.3 = 5 studs on a 114.3mm circle
5x120 = 5 studs on a 120mm circle
5x120.65 = 5 studs on a 120.65mm circle

Choosing the correct PCD ensures the wheels physically bolt to your hubs without modification.

How to measure your pcd?

If you’re not sure what your car’s PCD is, here’s how to measure it:

  1. Count the studs. Most drag cars run a 5-stud hub.
  2. Measure the circle. For a 5-stud hub, measure from the center of one stud to the outer edge of the opposite stud.
  3. Check the spec. Match your measurement against known PCD values (e.g., 114.3mm, 120mm, 120.65mm).

💡 Tip: Many OEM and aftermarket hubs list the PCD in their specs. If you’re unsure, check your factory service manual or ask a wheel/tire specialist.
